How to Make Your Own Homemade Body Butter

Difficulty:

Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Beeswax
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Shea Butter
  • Double Boiler or Microwave Oven
  • Olive Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Essential Oil (your choice)
    • 1
The first step in making homemade body butter is to gather the ingredients. This is possibly the most difficult part.
Body butter is made from an assortment of oils, as well as beeswax and cocoa butter and shea butter. You'll need those, as well as olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, and any essential oil you would like.
Fortunately, many of these items are readily available online - and usually for less than you'll pay in local stores for the same products.
    • 2
For preparing the body butter you will need either a double boiler or a microwave oven. You will also need a hand mixer.
Once you have all of these ingredients, measure them out. You'll need two ounces each of the butters and one ounce each of the beeswax and each of the oils, with the exception of the essential oil; you only need a few drops of that.
Take these and mix them together by hand in either the top pot of your double boiler or in a microwave safe bowl.
    • 3
Having combined the ingredients, proceed to melt them down slowly. If you are doing this in the microwave, do it in short chunks of time, stirring and checking the mixture frequently.
If you're melting them in a double boiler, then it will be easier to keep track of the melting rate.
Neither melting technique should take very long since you are only actually melting a few of the ingredients and the rest are already liquids.
    • 4
Once the ingredients are combined and melted, remove them from the heat source and mix them with the hand mixer while they cool.
In making homemade body butter, like making actual butter, you will see peaks in the surface of the mixture when it has reached the correct thickness and temperature and is ready.
    • 5
With your homemade body butter complete, put it into a jar or container of your choice and put it away for use. Slather it on after your next bath or shower to experience the soft skin that your hard work has earned you!

How To Make Coconut Body Butter for Dry Skin

  1. Prepare the ingredients—2 ounces of cocoa butter, 2 ounces of shea butter, 1 ounce of extra virgin olive oil, 1 ounce of virgin coconut oil, 1 ounce of jojoba oil, 1 ounce of beeswax and drops of your favorite essential oil.
  2. Prepare the tools or equipment—a double boiler or microwave oven, a bowl and a mixer. In case a microwave oven and a double boiler are not available, you can make use of your pot and your mixing bowl. Put your bowl on top of the pot with boiling water. Water level should not reach the bottom of your mixing bowl.
  3. Mix all the ingredients listed above in a bowl. Melt the mixed ingredients, preferably in a double boiler or microwave oven. This would not take too long. Be careful to overdo the melting process lest it would have an effect to the consistency of your coconut body butter.
  4. Once melted, remove it from the double boiler. Using an electric mixer, blend it while being cooled until it forms a peak. This is like making a meringue. Once the mixture forms a peak, it is ready.
  5. Transfer your coconut body butter into your prepared container. This would also be an ideal gift for your friends, family members and even giveaways for parties.
A thirsty dry skin can be pampered by applying coconut body butter. It is a real treat for your dry skin because it soothes rough, flaky and itchy skin. A commercially made body butter, which is more expensive, has the same effect with your coconut body butter in providing an intensive body moisturizing effect to your dry skin. With your homemade coconut body butter, you are spared from buying an expensive body moisturizer.

No-Petroleum Lip Gloss

Did you know that using petroleum based lip glosses like those commonly found in drug and grocery stores can actually cause dry lips to become worse? Opt for spending just a little time in your kitchen and producing a lip gloss that truely does the trick - and lots of it. Your lips will thank you as well as your pocketbook!

Ingredients

2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 tablespoon cocoa butter
2 teaspoons grated beeswax
10 drops avocado oil
Few drops of vitamin E oil.

Directions Melt the coconut oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax in a double boiler or over hot water. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Stir in the avodado oil and vitamin E oil.

Pour the balm into a clean container or purse size small tins (I save my purchased tins and re-use them.) Seal the container once the lip balm has cooled and solidified.

Fabulous All Natural Face Cream.

Ingredients.

Water group:
8 oz. distilled rose water (can use 3/4 cup aloe vera gel)
1 tsp. vitamin E oil
several drops essential oils - these oils are added to the water group because of their beneficial properties are destroyed by heat and the oil group is heated.

Oil group:
6 oz. expeller pressed canola oil, grapeseed or apricot kernel oil (can add 1 t. lanolin) - these oils are the liquid oil portion the following oils are the solid oil portion:
2 1/2 oz. mixture of coconut oil and cocoa butter (2/3 coconut, 1/3 or less cocoa butter) just eyeball the mixture but measure out the combined to 21/2 oz.                                                                                                                   1/2 oz. grated beeswax if you prefer lotion or 3/4 oz. if you prefer cream.

Instructions:
Pour the oil group into a small enamel saucepan. Heat slowly over low heat until the beeswax melts. This does not take long. You want to remove this mixture from the heat as soon as possible and pour into a measuring cup to let cool to room temperature. This takes a few hours, but you can speed up the cooling time by placing it in the refrigerator for awhile. Or, if you prefer, you can do this step the night before and in the morning you'll be able to proceed with the blending.

*The water group needs to be at room temperature* If you had your bottle of rose water or distilled water sitting on the counter in the kitchen for a while, it will be room temperature. Take the temperature of water and
note it. Pour the water into your blender. Pour 1 t. vitamin E oil into the water and add your essential oils, 10-40 drops. Be conservative, a little goes a long way - let your nose guide you.

When the oil group is the same temperature as your water group (the MOST IMPORTANT detail to making the cream successfully is making certain that both groups - the water and oils - are the exact same temperature before blending) turn your blender on its highest speed and slowly pour in the oils blending it for few seconds until all the oils are added. Turn off the blender and give the mixture a few good stirs with a narrow spatula, turn the blender on again for a few seconds. Repeat this step if necessary. The batch is done when  the two groups are incorporated and look wonderfully creamy. Spoon the mixture into clean jars, label and date them. Smaller jars work better unless you are going to keep your cream in the refrigerator. The cream contains no preservatives. One batch is approximately 16 oz. If you are not splitting this with a friend, you may want to make a half batch.

Ways to play with the recipe:
Water group:
You may use distilled water instead of rose water. You can use 2 1/2 oz of aloe vera gel in the water (decrease water by the amount used) or you may use orange flower water (particularly good for dry skin). You may add 1/2
teaspoon neo heliopan to the water group. This is a natural sunscreen. You also may add a couple droppersful of benzoin oil. It is wonderful for chapped skin and is a natural preservative. You could also add a little
borage oil (approx. 1 teaspoon) or carrot seed oil (several drops) if you wish.

Oil group:
You may use any good quality oil for your cream. Olive oil may be too heavy. Apricot kernel, grapeseed, sweet almond or expeller canola for the major portion of the liquid oils is recommended. You can use small
amounts of the super rich oils to replace some of your base liquid oils.
Examples:
avocado oil or jojoba oil.  tablespoon or two of these richer oils is suggested. If you choose to add these wonderful oils, it is  suggested that you melt your base oils and the beeswax before adding them. After melting,
add the rich oils. You may have to very gently re-heat again because the bees wax may solidify somewhat with the added cooler oils. These richer oils are fragile and their beneficial properties can be destroyed by heat.

Essential oils:
Dry skin - rose, sandalwood, ylang ylang, chamomile, lavender.
Normal - chamomile, lavender, geranium, neroli, rose.
Oily - geranium, lavender, lemon, patchouli, rosemary, tea tree, bergamot.
Combination - geranium, neroli, lavender, rose.
Mature- wrinkled - carrot seed oil, borage, frankincense, rose.
Chapped - benzoin.

When the wax is melted, bring the water/borax solution almost to boiling (put the glass cup with the water/borax in the microwave on High for 1 min., or use a water bath on the stove top). Remove the oil-beeswax mixture from the water bath and pour into blender. Slowly add water/borax to the mixture in the blender and whip. Allow the lotion to cool completely. BASIC LIP GLOSS RECIPE

Ingredients
tablespoons
 coconut oil
1 tablespoon cocoa butter
2 teaspoons beeswax
10-20 drops jojoba oil
optional - drops of honey or flavoring or vitamin E oil

Recipe
1.       Melt the coconut oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax in a double boiler or over hot water.
2.       Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
3.       Stir in the jojoba oil and any additional ingredients.
4.       Pour the balm into a clean container. Set the lid on top of the container, but slightly ajar to allow any moisture to escape.
5.       Seal the container once the lip balm has cooled/solidified.

Moisturizing Vitamin E Cream

4 oz. sweet almond oil
1 oz. beeswax
2 oz. water
10 drops Vitamin E oil
10 drops lavender essential oil

Melt the oil and the wax in a double boiler, Remove from heat, add water, and stir thoroughly.
Add your Vitamin E, essential oil and stir continuously until cool. This cream is very moisturizing and emollient.
It is nice for rough, dry, or chapped complexions and should help promote healthy looking skin.
After you have added the essential oil and the cream is still warm enough to pour, carefully pour it into Salve Jars or Metal Tins

Antiseptic Balm ( Use instead of antiseptic ointment, this is far superior! )

Ingredients:
2 ounces Beeswax
3 ounces Sweet Almond Oil
1 ounce Jojoba Oil
20 drops Wheatgerm Oil
20 drops Myrrh Essential Oil
20 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

( Makes enough to fill 4 each 1 ounce salve jars or 1 ounce metal tins )

A rule of thumb is 2 parts oil to one part beeswax. Simply heat the Sweet Almond and Jojoba oil in a saucepan and add Beeswax. If you want a thin consistency ( such as a cream or Vaseline ) add only a little bit of Beeswax. Want it thicker like wax? Just add more Beeswax.

Allow the base to cool down to see what the consistency is like. If it's too thick, add more Sweet Almond oil and reheat, too thin?, add more Beeswax.
As the base is cooling add the essential oils to enhance the healing effect of the balm. These essential oils can be found in our Essential Oil List.
After you have added the essential oil and the lip balm is still warm enough to pour, carefully pour it into Salve Jars or Metal Tins.

2 ounces cocoa butter
3 ounces sweet almond oil

Melt and mix all ingredients thoroughly. Mold into desired shape

Sweet Lavender Ointment

4 ounces sweet olive oil
3 to 4 ounces beeswax
1 ounce cocoa butter
15 drops vitamin e oil
25 drops lavender oil

Combine the sweet olive oil, beeswax, cocoa butter and heat thoroughly in the top of a double boiler. Remove from the heat. Add the vitamin e, lavender oil and beat well. Pour into salve jars and allow the mixture to cool before covering.

HAND CREAM

2 ounces beeswax
1 cup sweet almond oil
1 cup water
10 drops essential oil (if desired, for fragrance)

Heat beeswax and sweet almond oil until the wax melts. In another container, heat water until warm. Both mixtures should be warm, but not so hot as to be uncomfortable to the touch.
Place warm water in a blender. Cover the blender, leaving open the small opening in the cover. With the blender running on high speed, slowly pour in the beeswax-oil mixture in a thin stream. When most of the oil has been added, the mixture should begin to thicken.
At this point, add the essential oil. Continue to add oil and blend until the mixture is sufficiently thickened. Turn off the blender. You should have a thick cream. Spoon into salve jars or metal tins.

Quick and Easy Lip Balm Recipe

Makes 8 to 10 tubes.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons beeswax, grated (or use pastilles)
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
1 tablespoon cocoa butter
15 drops essential oil (optional)

Method

1. Measure all ingredients into a glass measuring cup.
2. Place cup into a small saucepan. Add a few inches of water to the pan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Stir occasionally until ingredients have melted.
3. Add essential/flavoring oil, if using. Stir well.
4. Pour carefully into tubes straight from the measuring glass (be sure the handle is not hot). Or, use a medicine dropper.
The balm will shrink as it cools and hardens, so fill as high as possible. You may want to use the medicine dropper to top off each tube.
Let cool completely before covering with cap (about 10 minutes).

Cocoa butter lip balm

For 20gr:
  • 5gr Beeswax
  • 5gr Cocoa Butter
  • 10gr Jojoba oil or Almond oil

Melt beeswax, cocoa butter and oil together in bain-marie. When the mix is liquid, quickly pour into small containers and let set.

* It moisturizes  chapped lips and it is smooth to apply, although i would recommend putting the mixture in retractable lipstick tube, cause it gets too hard to be put in a small pot.
