How to Make Your Own Homemade Body Butter

Difficulty:

Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Beeswax
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Shea Butter
  • Double Boiler or Microwave Oven
  • Olive Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Essential Oil (your choice)
    • 1
The first step in making homemade body butter is to gather the ingredients. This is possibly the most difficult part.
Body butter is made from an assortment of oils, as well as beeswax and cocoa butter and shea butter. You'll need those, as well as olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, and any essential oil you would like.
Fortunately, many of these items are readily available online - and usually for less than you'll pay in local stores for the same products.
    • 2
For preparing the body butter you will need either a double boiler or a microwave oven. You will also need a hand mixer.
Once you have all of these ingredients, measure them out. You'll need two ounces each of the butters and one ounce each of the beeswax and each of the oils, with the exception of the essential oil; you only need a few drops of that.
Take these and mix them together by hand in either the top pot of your double boiler or in a microwave safe bowl.
    • 3
Having combined the ingredients, proceed to melt them down slowly. If you are doing this in the microwave, do it in short chunks of time, stirring and checking the mixture frequently.
If you're melting them in a double boiler, then it will be easier to keep track of the melting rate.
Neither melting technique should take very long since you are only actually melting a few of the ingredients and the rest are already liquids.
    • 4
Once the ingredients are combined and melted, remove them from the heat source and mix them with the hand mixer while they cool.
In making homemade body butter, like making actual butter, you will see peaks in the surface of the mixture when it has reached the correct thickness and temperature and is ready.
    • 5
With your homemade body butter complete, put it into a jar or container of your choice and put it away for use. Slather it on after your next bath or shower to experience the soft skin that your hard work has earned you!

Fabulous All Natural Face Cream.

Ingredients.

Water group:
8 oz. distilled rose water (can use 3/4 cup aloe vera gel)
1 tsp. vitamin E oil
several drops essential oils - these oils are added to the water group because of their beneficial properties are destroyed by heat and the oil group is heated.

Oil group:
6 oz. expeller pressed canola oil, grapeseed or apricot kernel oil (can add 1 t. lanolin) - these oils are the liquid oil portion the following oils are the solid oil portion:
2 1/2 oz. mixture of coconut oil and cocoa butter (2/3 coconut, 1/3 or less cocoa butter) just eyeball the mixture but measure out the combined to 21/2 oz.                                                                                                                   1/2 oz. grated beeswax if you prefer lotion or 3/4 oz. if you prefer cream.

Instructions:
Pour the oil group into a small enamel saucepan. Heat slowly over low heat until the beeswax melts. This does not take long. You want to remove this mixture from the heat as soon as possible and pour into a measuring cup to let cool to room temperature. This takes a few hours, but you can speed up the cooling time by placing it in the refrigerator for awhile. Or, if you prefer, you can do this step the night before and in the morning you'll be able to proceed with the blending.

*The water group needs to be at room temperature* If you had your bottle of rose water or distilled water sitting on the counter in the kitchen for a while, it will be room temperature. Take the temperature of water and
note it. Pour the water into your blender. Pour 1 t. vitamin E oil into the water and add your essential oils, 10-40 drops. Be conservative, a little goes a long way - let your nose guide you.

When the oil group is the same temperature as your water group (the MOST IMPORTANT detail to making the cream successfully is making certain that both groups - the water and oils - are the exact same temperature before blending) turn your blender on its highest speed and slowly pour in the oils blending it for few seconds until all the oils are added. Turn off the blender and give the mixture a few good stirs with a narrow spatula, turn the blender on again for a few seconds. Repeat this step if necessary. The batch is done when  the two groups are incorporated and look wonderfully creamy. Spoon the mixture into clean jars, label and date them. Smaller jars work better unless you are going to keep your cream in the refrigerator. The cream contains no preservatives. One batch is approximately 16 oz. If you are not splitting this with a friend, you may want to make a half batch.

Ways to play with the recipe:
Water group:
You may use distilled water instead of rose water. You can use 2 1/2 oz of aloe vera gel in the water (decrease water by the amount used) or you may use orange flower water (particularly good for dry skin). You may add 1/2
teaspoon neo heliopan to the water group. This is a natural sunscreen. You also may add a couple droppersful of benzoin oil. It is wonderful for chapped skin and is a natural preservative. You could also add a little
borage oil (approx. 1 teaspoon) or carrot seed oil (several drops) if you wish.

Oil group:
You may use any good quality oil for your cream. Olive oil may be too heavy. Apricot kernel, grapeseed, sweet almond or expeller canola for the major portion of the liquid oils is recommended. You can use small
amounts of the super rich oils to replace some of your base liquid oils.
Examples:
avocado oil or jojoba oil.  tablespoon or two of these richer oils is suggested. If you choose to add these wonderful oils, it is  suggested that you melt your base oils and the beeswax before adding them. After melting,
add the rich oils. You may have to very gently re-heat again because the bees wax may solidify somewhat with the added cooler oils. These richer oils are fragile and their beneficial properties can be destroyed by heat.

Essential oils:
Dry skin - rose, sandalwood, ylang ylang, chamomile, lavender.
Normal - chamomile, lavender, geranium, neroli, rose.
Oily - geranium, lavender, lemon, patchouli, rosemary, tea tree, bergamot.
Combination - geranium, neroli, lavender, rose.
Mature- wrinkled - carrot seed oil, borage, frankincense, rose.
Chapped - benzoin.

HAND CREAM

2 ounces beeswax
1 cup sweet almond oil
1 cup water
10 drops essential oil (if desired, for fragrance)

Heat beeswax and sweet almond oil until the wax melts. In another container, heat water until warm. Both mixtures should be warm, but not so hot as to be uncomfortable to the touch.
Place warm water in a blender. Cover the blender, leaving open the small opening in the cover. With the blender running on high speed, slowly pour in the beeswax-oil mixture in a thin stream. When most of the oil has been added, the mixture should begin to thicken.
At this point, add the essential oil. Continue to add oil and blend until the mixture is sufficiently thickened. Turn off the blender. You should have a thick cream. Spoon into salve jars or metal tins.

Quick and Easy Lip Balm Recipe

Makes 8 to 10 tubes.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons beeswax, grated (or use pastilles)
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
1 tablespoon cocoa butter
15 drops essential oil (optional)

Method

1. Measure all ingredients into a glass measuring cup.
2. Place cup into a small saucepan. Add a few inches of water to the pan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Stir occasionally until ingredients have melted.
3. Add essential/flavoring oil, if using. Stir well.
4. Pour carefully into tubes straight from the measuring glass (be sure the handle is not hot). Or, use a medicine dropper.
The balm will shrink as it cools and hardens, so fill as high as possible. You may want to use the medicine dropper to top off each tube.
Let cool completely before covering with cap (about 10 minutes).

How to Make Olive Oil Body Butters

This is a recipe i have found on the 'ehow.com'

there is the link

http://www.ehow.com/how_6557058_make-olive-oil-body-butters.html

i just made it and i wanted to share it cause it's awesome.
i have tried many body butter recipes and by far i think this is the best!
instead of carnauba or palm wax i've used beeswax and it worked fine.
for fragrance i have used 10 drops of lavender essential oil, but you can use whatever you like, or just leave it as is.
the outcome is a soft, silky butter which leaves the skin regenarated and moisturised.

Things You'll Need:

  • ¼ cup distilled water
  • ½ teaspoon borax -- preferably cosmetic grade
  • ½ cup organic, cold-pressed virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons organic, virgin coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable wax -- examples: carnauba or palm wax
  • 20 drops of high quality essential oil -- example: lemon balm or lavender essential oil
  • Heavy duty whisk
  • Heavy bottom pot
  • Double boiler
  • Spoon
  • Sterilized 8 oz. jar

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ¼ cup distilled water
  • ½ teaspoon borax -- preferably cosmetic grade
  • ½ cup organic, cold-pressed virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons organic, virgin coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable wax -- examples: carnauba or palm wax
  • 20 drops of high quality essential oil -- example: lemon balm or lavender essential oil
  • Heavy duty whisk
  • Heavy bottom pot
  • Double boiler
  • Spoon
  • Sterilized 8 oz. jar

  1. Simmer distilled water and borax in the heavy bottom pot just until borax has dissolved. Cover and remove from heat.

  2. Add about an inch of tap water to the bottom of your double boiler and bring the water to a simmer. When water has reached temperature, add the olive oil, vegetable wax and the coconut oil to the top of the double boiler.

  3. Whisk oils and wax mixture until melted. Remove pan from heat. Continue to gently whisk the olive oil mixture while adding the water and borax at a very slow drizzle. Whisk until water is well incorporated.

  4. Continue whisking the olive oil body butter as it cools and increase whisking speed as it begins to thicken.

  5. Add your essential oil fragrance to the olive oil body butter when the mixture feels slightly warm but not hot. Mix well until body butter reaches room temperature.

  6. Spoon your new body butter into the sterilized jar and cover.

    Tips & Warnings

    • To prolong shelf life, keep the body butter  in the refrigerator. Use within 60 days.
    • Double or triple this recipe and give decorative containers of olive oil body butter as gifts. Be sure to give instructions on how to keep the body butter.
    • You may use an electric mixer in place of a whisk. Set the speed to low for the first part when incorporating water/borax mixture to the olive oil mixture. After about 5 minutes, when the body butter has thickened, increase speed to medium and continue mixing until body butter has cooled to room temperature.
